Languishing on my double pointed needles is the lonely cuff of a stripy sock. The yarn is Schachenmayr Nomotta Regia in Brasil, one of those fancy self-striping sock yarns. A yoga teacher friend photocopied her favorite pattern for me (plain ole rib, nothing to see here), because she thought it'd make an easy first sock.
Easy it is. K2, P2. No problem. I'm not at all psyched that I had to buy a new set of double pointed needles to get the right gauge, and the LYS only had metal ones. In my enthusiasm to start the project, I relented and bought what they had on hand. I find that the needles are a bit heavy for such fingery work.
I knit a lot of projects for my husband, because I like the idea of making gifts for people. He's an obvious guinea pig, and loves whatever I make him. I intentionally picked out a manly color especially for him.
The problem is: the sock pattern I have isn't big enough. So, I thought, "hey I'll make it for myself, just to get the practice." But I'm really not digging the colors for me. This is destined for the frog bin.
Must find men's sock pattern.

Knitty's Thuja (http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEwinter05/PATTthuja.html ) or Universal Toe Up Sock Formula (http://knitty.com/ISSUEsummer06/PATTuniversalsock.html ) would both fit (or be tailored especially to fit) a man. I used the toe up formula for my first socks and made them for my DBF. The only thing is you have to look into stretchy bind offs. Or, if you like the pattern you are using, you can use the sock formula to adjust to the proper number of stitches for you DH's foot. There are also several formula's available online for basic socks, but I dont know the URL's off hand. I like the sock formula's best, but I think thats because I am engineering minded -- I like to build things ;-P

Kazel: Thanks for the sock links. The other day, I swore I found a sock calculator for dummies and now I can't find it! So, you saved me some do-over searching. :)
